The Easy Foam Spider
A very simple terrestrial fly made from closed cell foam. I use
contrasting colors in the tutorial, but any color combination can be used.
Feel free to play around with the colors.
- Mustad 94833 size 6-12
- Closed cell foam
- Black rubber legs
- 6/0 Uni-thread
Crimp the barb of the hook and tie on the thread. Start the thread back 1/4 of the shank length from the bend and wrap forward to the middle of the shaft.
Take a strip of closed cell foam (craft foam) about 1/4 inch wide by 1 inch long, and tie it into the hook at the middle. You will need to use a few wraps to secure the foam. I spread out the wraps to give a larger color spot on top of the fly.
Take 2 strips of black leg material and tie it onto the top middle of the fly with 2 thread wraps. Pull the legs to the side once they are secured, and then give them a couple more wraps to tighten them down.
Wrap the thread under the foam to about 1/4 of the shaft lenth from the eye. Add 2 or 3 half hitches to the hook and trim off the thread. Use a pair of scissors to trim the foam to shape.
