Welcome to Copper Fly - Begginners guide to tying

Fall Favorite by OSD

Fall Favorite Fishing Fly OSD has submitted another great fly. This fly is designed to catch Salmon and Steelhead. The fly uses some great color (red and orange) and some flash to attract attention in the water.

Ingredients for this fly:
  • Salmon hook
  • Copper wire
  • Silver holographic tinsel
  • Red saddle hackle
  • Yellow saddle hackle
  • Orange calf tail
  • Red 6/0 thread
Tie on thread.

Place your hook into your vice and tie in your thread near the head of the hook. Wind the thread to the bend of the hook.

Tie in the wire and holo tinsel.

Tie in your holographic tinsel and your copper wire.

Wind forward.

Wind your tinsel to just behind the eye of the hook, and tie it off. Trim off any excess tinsel. Wrap the copper wire forward to the same spot as the tinsel. Make the winds of the wire as even as possible. Tie in the wire and trim.

Tie in the Hackle.

Select 2 pieces of hackle. One red and one Yellow. Strip off the feathers on the bottom and trim the stem to about 1/4 inch. Tie the hackle in by the stems of the feathers securly.

Finish the fly.

Wrap the hackle arounf the hook 3 or 4 times, and tie it off and trim the excess. Take a small clump if orange calf tail, and tie it in on the head of the fly. This should extend a little past the hackle. Trim the excess material from the head of the fly, and apply a few wraps to hide any material. Apply a whip finish, and cement the head.
